Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA), is designed for people who haven’t seen results from traditional chiropractic care or medical care.
As the name suggests, MUA patients are given anesthesia through an IV before their treatments begin. However, you won’t be completely unconscious. Instead, you’ll be under what’s known as “twilight sedation” – meaning you’ll be awake, but you’ll be much more relaxed about what’s going on around you, and you won’t be able to feel any pain. That way, Dr. Arvanitis will be able to stretch your muscles and manipulate your joints more freely.
HOW MANY MUA TREATMENTS DOES IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS?
If you qualify as a candidate for MUA, you will be scheduled to receive treatments for three consecutive days. After that, you’ll go through a special follow-up program that lasts for 4-8 weeks, consisting of stretching, strength training, physical rehabilitation, joint manipulation and physiological modalities. Luckily, though, most people see a major improvement after the first three days!
IS IT SAFE?
Some people get nervous anytime they hear the word “anesthesia”. However, MUA comes with fewer risks than traditional surgery, because you’re not going all the way under.
In fact, Manipulation Under Anesthesia is a legitimate medical procedure that’s covered by most insurance plans. It has been part of osteopathic medicine since the late 1930’s, and it has been part of the chiropractic world for more than a quarter of a century. In that time, countless people have used it to eliminate their pain!
